VANDALS caused £20,000 worth of damage to pedestrian crossings in Bournemouth.

Now police have appealed for help in identifying five men captured on CCTV near the scene of the crime.

The incident took place at the dual pedestrian crossing on Holdenhurst Road, next to the Texaco garage and Bournemouth train station at 5.25am on New Year’s Day.

The pedestrian crossing control box was forced open and the electrics were exposed where further damage was caused.

Sergeant Gary Coulsby, of Bournemouth police, said: “Following extensive enquiries, I am now able to release three CCTV images of five people who I am keen to speak with as I believe they could help us with our investigation.

“I would also like to speak with anyone who may have witnessed this incident take place or may have details about those responsible.”

Police have released three high-quality images showing the men, dressed in casual clothing. One even appears to be pointing at the CCTV camera.

No arrests have been made.

Witnesses and anyone with information have been urged to call Dorset Police in confidence on 101 quoting crime number C:14:C:3186. Alternatively, call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where mobile phone tariffs may apply.

Surely some officers must recognise these people, would be a strange first crime if they were otherwise law abiding.

Jetwasher - water and electronics don't mix! If they are ever caught they will be hit with a severe conditional discharge at the most and we, the public will pick up the tab as usual. Anything for a laff, eh?

If you had had to drive around the area at the time of the repairs and the chaos it caused I reckon that was cheap if adding in the disruption factor.

I do understand that vandalism is a serious business. But was this really the worst crime committed on New years Eve? If so, then Bournemouth really is a safe place to be, and the doom mongers are clearly wrong. And does vandalism to a crossing need such police time spent on it? I'm assuming that no other crimes have been committed in Bournemouth since New Years eve so the police can justify spending time on 'extensive enquiries' investigating this.
