Top ten B&Bs: Bindon Bottom in Dorset named best in the world by TripAdvisor

Bournemouth Echo: The Bindon Bottom B&B in West Lulworth The Bindon Bottom B&B in West Lulworth

A BED and breakfast in West Lulworth has been named the best in the world.

Bindon Bottom, a Victorian country house close to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, scooped the title of World’s Best B&B at the TripAdvisor 2014 Travellers’ Choice awards.

Award winners were determined based on the reviews of TripAdvisor travellers around the globe. The Dorset B&B has risen up the ranks to become the world’s number one after coming 10th in 2012.

It is run by Clive and Lisa Orchard, who set up the B&B in 2010 as a change of lifestyle after reaching natural career breaks. Clive is originally from Dorset and learnt to swim at Durdle Door.

Lisa, originally from Sydney, Australia, said: “We are so grateful to our guests for taking the time to write the reviews. We both love the area and we’re hoping that people have a wonderful holiday in Dorset, which is something we can help them to do.”

TripAdvisor reviewers describe the quirkily named B&B as an ‘amazing little gem’ with a breakfast ‘to die for’.

One reviewer wrote: “Spotlessly clean, with lots of thoughtful extra touches.”

Bindon Bottom, named because it is sited near Bindon Hill, has a strong literary lilt, with its five guest rooms named after authors including Dorset dialect poet William Barnes and Enid Blyton.

Lisa said: “I think it’s our personal choices that make us different.”

Also flying the flag for Dorset is the Summer Lodge Hotel in Evershot, which was named the 8th Best Small Hotel in the UK.

Ah, tripadvisor, the keyboard warriors greatest tool, this website will die in the next few years, it's now used by people to attempt to blackmail discount from establishments and by rival competitors to cast doubt over potential customers, most reviews are just negatives left by someone who is a 'first time reviewer'. Most establishments have now stopped using it for that very reason, if I look for accommodation, I check feedback on sites such as late rooms and booking.com, at least that way I know the reviewer has actually stayed at the hotel

Totally agree, revue sites give a false picture, people will leave a review if they have or believe they have had a poor experience but often don't think to leave a revue if it is positive.

I use trip advisor and always leave feedback both positive and negative. I only leave my comments on places i have actually visited and most of them more than once

I went to a cafe/restaurant for lunch one day while on holiday last year, it was a terrible lunch with poor service and on checking Tripadvisor afterwards it was clear the majority of others thought the same, wish i'd checked it before we ate there, what does that tell you.

I pretty much adopt the same approach as hamworthygirl to Trip Advisor but I can see where steelpaul is coming from with his remarks regarding first time reviewers bad mouthing places they probably haven't stayed in or eaten at.

Another phenomenon that I've noticed is positive reviews garnering a ridiculous amount of 'helpful' votes, obviously staff at the reviewed establishment being encouraged by management to create a profile with Trip Advisor and clicking on YES where it says 'Was this review helpful'?

On the whole, I would much rather have trip-advisor than not and, as with all such sites, you need to engage brain when reading reviews. I am personally pretty active in reviewing restaurants, hotels and tourist sites I visit - good and bad - and I always look at reviews prior to booking. Look at reviews for restaurants in Bournemouth and Poole - a not unreasonable picture, but heavily skewed by number of reviews for smaller establishments and, probably, major groups of visitors to the area not being online or likely to post reviews. No doubt there's some rigging of reviews, and there's some active reputation management by establishments in order to bump up their ratings (no bad thing - something local establishments could do more of?). But let's hear it for a Dorset establishment that's come top - good on yer!

I always check out Trip Advisor. Not much point looking at Late Rooms or booking.com etc. as I think you'll find not all hotels are listed. Also I never put reviews on commercial sites as the hotels can easily identify you.

I find Trip Advisor brilliant, if used intelligently. And have never had a bad experience after using Trip Advisor and then booking a hotel or restaurant. On the contrary over the years we have discovered some great places which we would have otherwise not known about!

I think the main critics of TA are either owners of poorly reviewed establishments, or people who aren't that computer savvy (I know a few).
