Walk to school has become 'dog poo dodge' - pick up after your pets, urges mum

Bournemouth Echo: Nikki Storer with her children Melisha, 9, and Freya, 20 months, who are fed up with dog mess littering the way they walk to school each day Nikki Storer with her children Melisha, 9, and Freya, 20 months, who are fed up with dog mess littering the way they walk to school each day

A BOURNEMOUTH mum who has labelled her walk to school the ‘dog poo dodge’ has appealed to dog owners to pick up after their pets.

Nikki Storer said the problem of dog mess left on pavements in the Redhill area of Bournemouth is now so bad that she has to clean her pushchair wheels after every school run.

And the final straw came on Hill View School’s Roman day, when her nine-year-old daughter Melisha stepped in dog mess immediately outside their home and got it up the back of her toga-style costume.

Nikki had to return home to clean up Melisha and her costume, resulting in her daughter getting a late mark against her name at school.

Nikki said: “It has gone beyond a joke now. Last week there was a load of dog mess right outside the school gates – I was just congratulating myself on dodging it the whole journey when the pushchair went through it.

“The Roman day saga was just awful. I had taken the car as I was going straight on after school but Melisha managed to step in it right outside our drive. I had to clean the car because it was all over the mat, her shoes and her costume.

“There are a lot of responsible dog owners and I see our regular ones go by with their bags. But there also seems to be some who think they can just get away with it.

“Who would let their dog foul right outside the school gates? Children will walk in it and traipse it into school, it’s disgusting and it’s putting children’s health at risk.”

Councillor David Smith, cabinet member for the environment, said: “We take the issue of dog fouling extremely seriously in a bid to protect both public health and to keep our streets clean and attractive. Our street cleansing teams target dog fouling as part of their general work in the borough and increase activity when problems are reported in certain areas.”

  • Bournemouth council said it operated a no excuses policy and will issue £50 fines to those caught breaking the rules. Anyone who witnesses an incident should report it to the Environmental Health team on 01202 451296 or the street cleansing team on 01202 451199.

The council added that any photo evidence or statements provided by members of the public can also help them prosecute offenders.

There ought to be a DNA bank for dog mess, you should be able to point your smart phone at the pile and it will tell you the name and address of gulity mutt. And owner getting a nice fat fine in the post. Of course this is sci fi, but would't it sort a few problems out!!

AS a dog owner I get very annoyed when I see people have not bothered clearing up behind their dog.

Its not the dogs fault, down to the owner. I wonder how many people have been "prosecuted" under the dog fouling law? Does anyone know?

Similar to mobile use when driving the fines need to be higher to hurt the pocket.

I agree that all dog owners should clean up after their dog however I wonder how much of the mess left on the pavements is down to the many foxes in the area ? At night you will find the foxes wander the streets and really don't care if they leave their mess in front of school gates or not . i used to get annoyed thinking a dog owner was allowing their dog to leave its mess outside my house almost daily until one night I saw that it was a fox .

The Council may have a policy of fining dog owners who fail to clean up after their dogs but how often is this policy actually enforced ?
.
Message to Councillor David Smith - Word are cheap, get off your backside and sort the problem out. If you applied to same vigour to issuing fines for dog fouling as you do issuing parking tickets the problem would soon be solved.

Omg, are you feel real? All dogs crap not just staffys! I am a staffy owner, & am also a mum of a hillview pupil. The situation is terrible. On contacting the council about it they said there are enforcements in place and that they would send out some stickers for me to place where there is a problem! Wtf??? Just 2 days ago I caught someone in the act dragging their dog along whilst it was trying to leave a log. She clearly had no intention of picking it upuntil I pulled up alongside her! To those who reckon its fox poo, fox poo is not as big as sime of the logs we have to dodfe in the hillview area!

There's a game the kids play here called 'sh##ty' foot'. Of course this only works if you know where the dog owner lives. Collect the offending in an A4 envelope, or wrapped in newspaper, deposit this at the front door of said owner, set it alight, ring the front door bell, and bugger off behind a tree. Dog owner opens door, sees paper alight and stamps it out, pathetic yes, but hugely amusing to kids and drunks.

Collect the offending in an A4 envelope, or wrapped in newspaper, deposit this at the front door of said owner, set it alight, ring the front door bell, and bugger off behind a tree. Dog owner opens door, sees paper alight and stamps it out, pathetic yes, but hugely amusing to kids and drunks. steve.in.sydney

Dog poo is a real problem everywhere, not just around schools!
When we had a dog I always picked up the poop in my little baggies and what's more I disposed of it properly and didn't just fling it into a tree!
If I can bend down to pick it up with a slipped disc in my back and constant sciatica why can't anyone else?
Plus it's nice to see the mum and elder child are wearing nice coats but the kid in the buggy doesn't have a coat. Or shoes.

Bring back the dog licence. Funny that the government can spend millions checking our phones and emails to check we're not going to blow them up guy fawkes style but is too frightened of losing dog owners votes to bother with a dog licence system. Most dog owners are responsible and hate their own pets treading and rolling in other dog owners mess. They'd like a dog licence system to be in place more even than non dog owners would. It shows how out of touch our politicians are to leave us wallowing in this filth. Yuck.

When I was passing 2 Riversmeet skate park while walking my dog, a lovely overweight labrador did his poo but the owners (an "older" couple") were trailing so far behind the dog they didn't see him do it. I waited till they got closer and pointed out where he'd done it. The woman got the poo bag and waved it at me, saying she ALWAYS picks up. I said I was just pointing it out as the dog warden was about. I walked on - and noticed they walked on too. I KNEW they had no intention of picking it up. I went back and sure enough - there was the pile of poo. I stopped and took a photo on phone camera. The couple were quite a way ahead, looked back and saw me. She sent her husband back to pick it up. I then came face to face with the woman and told her she was a liar and I was sick of treading in dog poo. Loud words were exchanged and I walked off. The last I heard was the husband shouting OYYYYYYY at me. Ah the delights of dog walking.

I too am sick of the amount of dog poo on the pavements around the area - especially walking my child to and from kingsleigh school each day & frequently cleaning it off of shoes and the buggy wheels. I have expressed my concerns to the council and they sent me 2 stickers - as if that is going to make a difference!?! They should take the matter more seriously especially when it concerns the pavements around a school, so should the dog owners! Maybe every time we see a new turd we should call the street cleansing team so they realise how bad it is.

It could be made easier. All dog walkers should at least have the means to clean up after their dogs, on them. Fine them if they haven't. It wouldnt stop everyone, but at least it would show a presence of enforcement. All very well having bins and signs, but no good if the law isn't enforced.

What I fail to understand is why dog owners deposit their dogs poo in a bag then fling it in the most convenient place, we live on a road popular with dog walkers and are gifted at least 4 bags a week straight into our front garden, it makes me sick, the bags degrade and I end up removing revolting sloppy bags of the stuff from my lawn. I just don't understand the mentality of picking it up and dumping it on someone else's property, can't wait till I catch someone in the act and get to return their bag of poo

That is disgusting. I've seen flung poo bags in trees and hedges, or hung on fences. Who do they think picks it up? Poo fairy? If there is one thing worse than not picking it up, its using the bags and disposing of them like that. There is no logic to that mentality. I've heard walkers say that there aren't enough bins. Tough! Your dog, your mess. Take it home and bin it there. Just like any other type of litter or waste, the owners responsibility to dispose of it carefully and considerately!

Here are some tips on what to do with dog poo from the 70's.

1) put some dog poo into brown paper bag and twist the bag top to form a fuse. Place bag outside unsuspecting victims house and light the fuse. Knock door and run a little way down the street to see the crime unfold. When the victim opens the door, they will stamp the fire out, resulting in a very smelly shoe.

2) On a really hot summers day, wearing some gloves, place some dog poo, onto the cabin air intakes of a car, usually just below the windscreen. Enjoy the internal glee of knowing that the person turning their fan onto max to cool the car will enjoy the fresh country smell in the cabin.

Taken from the bash street kids annual 1974.

Up until a year ago (curiously just after we got a dog) I regularly got fox poo on our front step. Issue all foxes with poop bags, disinfectant and low level poop scoop bins I say!

On the dog, and more sensible side, I often have spare poop bags in my pocket even when the dogs been left behind. I have on several occasions scooped poop that wasn't my dogs when it has been on a pavement or near play areas. I have also offered people a bag from my pocket to clean up after their pooch (not always to enthusiastic response!). Now at the risk of being a little controversial here, has anyone else noticed how many owners of 'hard' dogs (Rottweiler's, large stocky terriers, big ginger dog that looks like a staffie on stilts and steroids) don't scoop? They are usually the ones that don't keep their dogs on leads in areas like Stanpit marsh where off lead dogs are prohibited. Perhaps if compulsory; dog registering, micro chipping, DNA data base and visits to vets for annual check up and inoculations etc was bought in, the money raised from the registration could be used for dog wardens on the beat with poop offenders being given on the spot fines or facing their pet impounded until such time they paid up.
