HUNDREDS of villagers turned out for a festive carol concert in Burton near Christchurch on Sunday.

The annual carol concert saw more than 700 people flock to the village green to see the lights on the Christmas tree turned on.

The event, organised by Burton Parish Council, also saw the return of the popular miniature donkeys with an appearance from Father Christmas as well. Carols included Away in a Manger, Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Little Donkey along with nativity readings.

The mayor of Christchurch, cllr John Lofts, helped Burton Parish Council chairman Judy Jamieson switch on the Christmas tree lights with a raucous countdown.

Musical accompaniment was provided by the Christchurch and Highcliffe Silver Band.

Parish council chairman Judy Jamieson said: “We are absolutely delighted at the turnout this weekend.

“Villagers turned out to give massive support to the event and it was wonderful. I believe it was the most popular we have ever had.

“There were probably between 700-800 people on the green and there were over 200 children as well.

“I’m also delighted that this was the first time the Christchurch and Highcliffe Silver Band had joined us and of course the star turn was the five donkeys, who made it just that little bit more special.

“We raised more than £150 for the Christchurch food bank and our thanks go to everyone who attended.”
