Mutilated: man killed and decapitated Spanish student Sergio Marquez in "frenzied attack" at Lansdowne flat
A MAN killed by his housemate in Bournemouth in 2012 was the victim of a “frenzied” attack.
Sergio Marquez, who was 23, was stabbed before paranoid schizophrenic Karl Addo cut off his head and mutilated his stomach.
The two men had lived together in a flat in Lansdowne Road for just two months.
Today, Addo pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Sergio on the grounds of diminished responsibility at Bournemouth Crown Court.
Nigel Pascoe QC, prosecuting, said Sergio, who was a waiter at the Britannia Hotel in Meyrick Park, was “killed in a prolonged, horrific and violent attack”.
Addo used a cleaver, and officers found two knives on him when he was arrested shortly afterwards in nearby Beechey Road trying to escape.
Mr Pascoe said the defendant had been released from the Huntley Mental Health Centre in London, where he was voluntarily receiving treatment, the day before a panel of professionals decided he should be sectioned.
He then effectively “disappeared” from view, despite having “persistent delusions that he was being pursued and attacked by a gang”.
Addo killed Sergio on the day he was due to leave the flat after being evicted.
Mr Pascoe said: “Sergio Marquez and his friends let it be known that Mr Addo was difficult.
“He was untidy – he would not clear up – he ate food that belonged to them and used pages from books as lavatory paper.”
On the day of Sergio’s death, he and housemate Natalia Gil-Perez were planning a surprise birthday party for the fourth person living in the flat, Joan Suarez-Florez.
The two others had been out at the time Sergio was attacked by Addo in the corner of their shared room.
A neighbour, interviewed by police following Addo’s arrest, reported hearing Sergio pleading “Please, Karl,” repeatedly in the minutes before he was killed.
He also heard Addo laugh.
Judge Mr Justice Ian Burnett will sentence Addo, 30, of no fixed abode, at the court at 10.30am on Wednesday.
The defendant was represented by Oba Nsugbe QC.
