MORE than nine out of 10 homes and businesses in Dorset are being promised superfast broadband in the latest roll-out.

The Superfast Dorset project will bring the vital connectivity to 95 per cent of premises and access to the fibre network to 97 per cent, the county council says.

The contract with BT, worth £31.75million, is seeing the telecoms provider bring fibre optics to towns including Blandford and Shaftesbury, with more connections being made over the coming months.

Superfast Dorset says almost all of rural North Dorset will have access to faster and more reliable broadband through the project over the next three years, with the first communities benefiting by the end of 2014.

County councillor portfolio holder for environment, Hilary Cox, said: “We believe that North Dorset will be best-served by Superfast Dorset.”

The first areas to be covered will be announced after Christmas.
