DISABLED adults are enjoying arts and environmental activities thanks to a partnership between Diverse Abilities Plus and Holton Lee.

The disability charity, which supports children and adults with disabilities and their families across the county, has teamed up with Holton Lee, near Wareham, as part of its Barnabas day opportunities service.

Adults from Barnabas can enjoy art, sculpture and photography as well as seasonal environmental and wildlife based activities such as digging ponds and foraging, working with plants and wildlife, plus cider making, glass painting and dough making.

The activities offer adults with disabilities the chance to develop new skills, enjoy new experiences and create wonderful things to be proud of.

Small groups of people supported by Diverse Abilities Plus have been visiting Holton Lee on a daily basis since the beginning of October, with numbers expected to grow to 35 people a week by the end of November.

Martin, an adult supported by the charity who has participated in the activities at Holton Lee, said: “I love it here; it’s really peaceful and great to be able to get out in the countryside.”

Jill, a support worker for Diverse Abilities Plus, said: “Holton Lee is a stunning place and I hadn’t realised it would be as beautiful as it is. It gives an opportunity for adults we support to experience a range of different opportunities that we might not find elsewhere.”

In addition, the project will enable the charity’s day opportunities service to expand so it can provide support to a larger number of people.

The charity also has allotments at Kingston Lacy, where service users can grow a variety of fruit and veg. Donations for gardening equipment, such as rakes, forks, trowels, watering cans, seeds and wheelbarrows, are appreciated. If you can help, call Lisa Stapley at Barnabas on 01202 739560.
