CRANBORNE Middle School has been celebrating a truly golden year and challenging its pupils to embrace more creative and independent forms of learning.
Nestled in an idyllic, rural location near the heart of Cranborne Chase, the school prides itself on being a “caring family” and a nurturing environment for children aged from nine to 13.
Now in its 50th year, the school has been showcasing the successes of the 378 students and celebrating the landmark occasion with an aeroplane fly-past and commemorative sculpture.
Craig Watson has been head teacher for five years and is proud of the caring family atmosphere and strong relationships formed between the children and staff.
He said: “I am most proud of the phenomenal relationships we have between the children and staff, as they are so involved and hands-on.
“The school really feels like a caring family and we are so keen to make a difference in the lives of the kids.
“We don’t treat the school like a factory as it’s not all about grades.
“We make sure that we look at the whole child so they can come out a rounded and respectful individual.”
Cranborne Middle is now challenging students to dig deep and respond to new methods of independent learning and integrated units which combine a range of complimentary subjects.
Mr Watson said: “We want children to take the lead and take more responsibility for their own learning.
“For example, with Harvest Festival we are encouraging the students to engage and discover how much value food could be bought for £378 rather than just bringing in tins.”
The school has been enhancing cultural opportunities for students by introducing the Arts Award, linking with the Salisbury Playhouse and organising French exchange trip.
Pupils are drawn from a large catchment area, attracting youngsters from Blandford, Verwoood and Wimborne.
The next Year 4 Open Day will be held at the school on November 13.
