THE WILD and wonderful delights of the Bournemouth Arts By The Sea Festival took over Bournemouth Gardens across the weekend.

From discos in the trees to eccentric tea parties and pianists, the installations and performances entertained during the free events that opened the three-week event.

Performers including Mr Wippy and the Conettes, Dick Danger and Rimiski Piano were among the acts on Saturday and Sunday after the machines of Mutoid Waste provided a spectacular start on Friday night.

Trevor Langton, 52, from Mudeford, said: “I think it’s very good and has grown, as it’s the third event.

“I think it’s much better and more diverse this year.”

Rosemarie Baker, 52, bid manager from Meyrick Park, was among those enjoying the festival.

She said: “It’s definitely interesting and out there.

“It’s also a bit weird, but I mean that in a nice way.”

Susan King, 52, a PA from Wimborne, said: “We saw a theatre group who were dressed like the Artful Dodger, who were playing music, and it’s quite entertaining to see something different.”

Matt Skan, 36, a project manager from West Cliff, said: “It’s nice to come with the family and see something you have seen at the Olympics. It’s all interesting and gives you a reason to come out and about.”

The festival runs from September 20 to October 12, with music, dance, performance, film and the visual arts.

Carol Maund, festival manager, was really pleased with the start.

“The audience really enjoyed Dick Danger as he’s a real showman,” she added.
