A PEDESTRIAN remains in a critical condition after a crash with a cyclist in Purbeck.

The 60-year-old woman was rushed to Southampton General Hospital with life-threatening injuries after the crash in Langton Matravers at about 11.10am on Saturday.

The woman from the Bedford area was airlifted to Southampton by Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, which landed close to the scene at Coombe Lane at the junction with Three Acre Lane.

The collision took place next to a bus stop opposite the entrance to Leeson House.

A 61-year-old male cyclist from the Bournemouth area suffered serious injuries and was taken to Poole General Hospital.

His bike, a Specialized road cycle, was left at the scene to be examined by specialist officers.

Police closed the road while accident investigators examined the street and pedal cycle.

It remained closed for almost 12 hours as specialist officers were called to another crash on the A35 on Saturday afternoon.

It could only reopen once the investigation had been completed and officers were able to return from the other collision.

Residents spoke of their shock at the severity of the incident, which took place on a popular cycling route, past Putlake Adventure Farm and Camping.

The village was especially busy this Bank Holiday weekend as the Purbeck Folk Festival was also taking place nearby.

Ken Burgess, who lives metres from the crash scene said: “It's horrific.

“It’s very shocking although this is a fast road, popular with cyclists.

“We weren’t here when it happened but our neighbour was. It’s horrible to see. I hope they are both okay.”

His wife, Kay, added: “Our thoughts are with both of them. It’s very sad. I know a lot of people will be upset by this.”

Another neighbour said the road was always busy, even in the winter.

“I heard the sirens and we just had a feeling it was serious. I hope they both recover,” he said.

POLICE are also appealing for witnesses after a cyclist suffered serious injuries in a collision in Studland.

The crash happened at 12.45pm on Friday on Ferry Street in Studland.

The accident involved a blue Ford Focus and a cyclist.

Motorists also faced delays after a crash on the A31 at Sturminster Marshall on Sunday afternoon.

The westbound carriageway was partially blocked after the single-vehicle collision.

Witnesses are asked to call Dorset Police on 101.
