ADVENTUROUS students from Glenmoor School travelled to Swaziland to raise money and help support a school in the village of Shewula.

Eighteen girls built and varnished new benches for the school and produced colourful murals to decorate the walls of classrooms.

16-year-old Glenmoor student Stephanie Hazell approached the Steve Bernard Foundation to see whether they would be willing to provide a football kit for the older boys in the school.

The Foundation donated the kit, along with footballs, a football pump and marker cones.

Stephanie’s mum, Anita, said: “The boys were all so happy as this was their first official kit.

“All the girls had a fabulous time and they even hired a carpenter with the money they raised. This allowed them to create comfortable and practical classroom furniture for the students.

“The families of Shewula were grateful to all the Glenmoor School girls for their fund raising efforts to make big improvements to their school and for all the equipment donated to the Shewula Football team.”

The Steve Bernard Foundation was formed in 2006 following the popular 18-year-old’s tragic death in a car accident in November 2006.

It has supported more than 100 sporting projects across 20 sports and four continents, including outreach projects in Thailand and Uganda.

The girls spent two weeks refurbishing the classrooms and assisting the school in Shewula from July 8 to 21.

Students will be finding out their GCSE marks today.
