ROADWORKS caused drivers to sit in queues for up to two hours along the A351 Sandford Road yesterday.
Workmen from Dorset County Council were carrying out resurfacing on the road between Sandford and Wareham as work continues to create a cycle path leading up to Lychett Minster.
Traffic was being controlled with the use of stop and go boards, meaning that cars could be seen tailing back along the Upton bypass, between 8am and around 2.30pm.
A spokesman for Dorset County Council said: “Workmen were working on widening the footpath in the area between Northmoor Way and Moredon Road, and were asked to stand down at regular intervals to allow traffic to travel through.”
They also apologised for any inconvenience caused to drivers.
Brian Huburn, director of The Gurkha restaurant, which is based close to where the works were taking place, said: “It’s the timing of it that was ridiculous, because it’s holidaymakers who are travelling through at that time, and if the works were a real emergency, then they should have been done at night.
“Traffic was at an absolute standstill and people were getting out of their cars and walking about.”
