TWO of Britain’s most distinguished poultry judges will weigh up a record-breaking flock of entries to the New Forest and Hampshire County Show.

Organisers of the county’s largest agricultural show have received more than 300 entries for their poultry section – more than double last year’s 130 exhibits.

The three-day show, backed by the Echo, starts on Tuesday, July 30, at New Park, Brockenhurst, and is expected to attract 100,000 visitors.

Former Poultry Club president Mike Hatcher and waterfowl specialist Graham Hicks will consider chickens, geese and ducks in 60 classes ranging from miniature Belgium Bantams to towering Cochins.

They will also judge more than 100 entries from the county’s top eggs producers.

Organisers had initially aimed for 200 poultry entries and section chairman Ed Godwin said: “This is a fantastic number of entries and a testament to how poultry-keeping is still one of the fastest growing hobbies in this country.

“We hope lots of people come and visit us at the show and enjoy coming to vote for their favourite feathered friend.”

Salisbury Poultry Club will help run the section, which will include tips on keeping your own birds. Last year organisers received praise from the Duke of Edinburgh when he discussed breeds kept at Sandringham. This year’s Royal guests are The Earl and Countess of Wessex.

Other highlights of the show include displays by the Devil’s Horsemen plus a thrilling Roman chariot racing display.

More than 2,500 horses and riders will compete in a range of classes, including 35 prestigious Horse of the Year Show categories, and there will be 900 sheep, 300 cattle and 100 pigs in the livestock section.

Visitors will also be able to take part in a tug of war contest against a tractor as well as the chance to try their hand at being a TV weather presenter.
