NEW CCTV cameras have been installed in a busy Bournemouth underpass five months after a student was sexually assaulted as she walked home.

The 20-year-old was attacked in the subway in Holdenhurst road in the early hours of February 1.

The victim, who cannot be identified, told the Daily Echo that she was walking to catch a bus when she was grabbed from behind She did not sustain any serious physical injuries, but was left badly shaken by her experience.

Police later released a CCTV image of a man they’d like to speak to as part of their investigation but the quality was very poor.

This sparked the Students Union at Bournemouth University to ask for Bournemouth Borough Council to improve the camera system there.

The council has since spent £13,000 on eight new cameras covering each tunnel of the underpass as well as improving the lighting so night time images are clearer.

Councillor David Smith, cabinet member for planning and environment, said: “The recent installation of CCTV cameras in this area form part of the Three Towns Travel programme which aims to make the route between Bournemouth Station and the town centre easier, safer and more attractive. Safety of our residents is paramount and any initiative that ensures that people feel safer in Bournemouth we would fully support.”

Sophie Chaytor-Grubb, the SUBU Vice President Lansdowne, said: “It is great to work collaboratively with the council and we’re really pleased that the area is now fully monitored with eight new cameras covering each tunnel in the underpass.”

The students union will be launching a campaign in September to help keep students safe while out in the town.
