CHRISTCHURCH residents protesting against a massive warehouse being built just metres from their homes say their quality of life has been ruined.

Homeowners in Grange Road expressed concerns about the height of the proposed 46ft metal clad Kondor building on Christchurch Business Park at a planning meeting earlier this year.

They were also concerned about the loss of natural light and shadowing it would create on their properties.

Despite their pleas the proposal was approved four to three by members who felt the economic benefits were too significant to turn down.

But now, with building work well under way, residents say their worst fears have been confirmed.

Supported by the Somerford Community Partnership and ward councillor David Jones, they have written to the council over their ongoing concerns.

Resident Linda Clark said: “We’re still angry about the misinformation which we consider councillors were given in the meeting.

“The building is a lot closer than was stated and we have concerns over their shadowing study.

“I had my house valued before this went up, and I’m going to have it done again.

“It’s affected our quality of life.”

Rachel Sowden, another neighbour said: “It’s a monstrosity. The next stage for us is to contact the Ombudsman over it.

“We feel we’ve been treated badly.”

Cllr Jones said: “I support measures to bring employment into the town but this has to be balanced against the rights and quality of life of the residents.

“I was very disappointed by the committee’s decision and believe that insufficient attention was paid to the points made about the light issues.

“It is obvious that the residents have suffered actual and measurable harm.

“The residents believe that the existing building is in breach of planning permission.”

Christchurch council said there are no enforcement issues currently on the site but they plan to monitor it.

*A spokesperson for applicant Terrace Hill, who is developing the warehouse for Kondor, said: “The construction works to date have been taking place within daytime working hours, to limit any potential disturbance, and we have taken steps to minimise dust levels.

"The contractors will ensure that the area is thoroughly cleaned once construction is completed in October and in the meantime will be happy to address concerns wherever possible.

“We would also like to thank the local residents for their patience.”

They said they have only received one complaint.
