A PENSIONER died of head injuries after stepping into the path of a van as he crossed the road, an inquest heard yesterday.

John Hudson, 85, suffered fatal injuries during the collision with a white Ford Transit van at the junction of Cliff Drive and Bodley Road in Canford Cliffs, Poole.

The accident occurred at 11.20am on Sunday, September 23, 2012, and the inquest heard that van driver Wayne Bown was not speeding, but may have been using a hands-free telephone before the incident.

District Coroner Sheriff Payne heard from witnesses that there were very poor weather conditions and he gave a verdict of accidental death.

John’s son Martin Hudson said: “He will be greatly missed and it is incredibly sad.

“He was a very well-respected member of the community and played badminton and tennis every week.”
