LOCAL photographers Andy Farrer and Julian Sawyer have captured the wild side of Purbeck at a new photographic exhibition.

Visitors are being urged to visit the showcase at Durlston Castle in July.

Andy’s photos reveal some of Purbeck’s hidden gems and highlight iconic scenes in a new light, while Julian’s photos take visitors ‘up close and personal’ with the beautiful wildlife of the area. Andy completed a two-year full-time photography course at the Art College in Bournemouth. He is known for his atmospheric shots of Swanage Pier.

Julian, who specialises in wildlife photography, said: “Getting close to wild birds and animals in their own environment is always a privilege.

“I hope my photographs show the beauty and perhaps even something of the personality of these wonderful creatures.”

Purbeck has been hailed as one of the richest areas in the country for wildlife. The exhibition – titled The Wild Side of Purbeck – is in the Fine Foundation Gallery at Durlston Castle from July 6 to 26.

As well as the pictures, there will be a chance to discover the stories and techniques behind the work, buy prints or cards to take home and meet the photographers. Andy and Julian will be on hand throughout to offer advice.

Julian moved to Purbeck with his young family in 1999.

He said: “I spend as much time as I can wandering its many paths and trails and my camera is never very far away.”

Durlston Country Park National Nature Reserve is owned and managed by Dorset County Council for conservation and public enjoyment. It recently re-opened after a major restoration project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and other partners.

The Fine Foundation Gallery at the Castle is a new space, created with funding from the Fine Foundation, for art, science, performance and events.

The exhibition is open from 11am to 5pm. Entry to the park and castle is free and all work is for sale.
