TRADERS in Bournemouth town centre are calling for more CCTV cameras to be installed after four shops had their windows vandalised on the same night.

Nails and You located in Commercial Road has its front window smashed in last night and this was the second time in a couple of months.

Manager Lee Le said: “We definitely need more CCTV cameras in the area because they act as a preventative. This is the second time in a couple of months and we are fed up.”

Hair 4 Divas on the corner of Commercial Road had its front window vandalised several weeks ago.

According to the owner Viola Chifamba, three other shop windows in the area were smashed on the same night.

Viola said: “More cameras would make a huge difference because people know there is no coverage on this stretch of the road and there are so many clubs in the area.

“My front window still hasn’t been fixed because of problems with contractors.”

“Three men were arrested but no one was convicted because of a lack of evidence. Maybe if there had been a camera there it would have been different.”

The other businesses targeted on the same night were Hair Force, King Bong and PC Tech, which has had several incidents in the last few months, according to Viola.

Leader of the council John Beesley said: “It’s an incredibly expensive process and we can’t just put in another facility after one or two incidents.

“There is a very complicated consultation before we install a camera.

“It is not just a question of cameras but also making sure each of the shops have adequate security measures and improved co-ordination with the police.”
