MOTORISTS are being urged to be on their guard after thefts from cars rose across Dorset – including big increases in Poole and Purbeck.

The figures released by Dorset Police yesterday show that there were 675 reported thefts from vehicles in April and May this year – compared to 557 for the same period two years ago.

In Poole alone they were up 58 per cent from 118 in 2011 to 187 in April and May this year, and in Purbeck incidents doubled in the same period from 30 to 61.

Dorset Police are urging people to make sure they keep their cars and vans locked up as so many of the thefts happen when vehicles are left insecure – either with doors or windows left open.

Inspector Ernie Henley said: “Don’t make it easy for thieves – I’m staggered by the number of cars that are left unlocked with valuable items inside. These items have included house keys, sat navs, mobile phones and even cash.

“Don’t underestimate the number of opportunist thieves who will try their luck if your car is left insecure. Always lock your car – for however short a period of time – and don’t leave any valuables inside, whether hidden or not.

“If possible, drivers should park their cars in well lit areas and always use their vehicle alarm if they have one.

“We are working hard to address the problem but we need members of the public to take steps to help keep themselves and their property safe.”
