COUNCILLORS rarely reject the advice of their highly paid officers without serious consideration, especially in planning matters which can be a legal and financial minefield on appeal.

That they did so on Monday night at Bournemouth Town Hall over the latest Winter Gardens proposal is much to their credit.

Planning board members had huge misgivings about many aspects of the proposal and a flavour of those misgivings is clearly expressed in our coverage of the issue today.

They were not comfortable, though in this case, officers clearly were.

The elected representatives made the right call.
