CULLED from old tables and various bicycle parts, this is Hamworthy Bike Club’s entry in the New Milton Pedal Car Grand Prix.

Built over the last few months by the enthusiastic Poole youngsters, helped by adult volunteers, the pedal car will be propelled through the streets of New Milton on July 14.

Number 66 will be competing with up to 60 mean machines on the one-kilometre street circuit, Monaco-style, with a team of four plus a reserve.

“The car has been thoroughly tested locally,” said PC Ian Schofield, who runs the popular bike club which meets every Wednesday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at Egmont Road, Turlin Moor.

Daniel Amey, 13, Josh Ramsay, 14, Kieran Brown, 13, Brandon Lee, 14, and Ethan Grant, 12, make up the team.

They will attempt to negotiate the tight turns and hairpin bends of the track as many times as possible during the two-hour race.

“We are going to do good,” said Daniel who along with other club members has helped make the pedal car, even doing the welding themselves.

Volunteers from the Christian Youth Work charity Impact, Matt Haine and Ian Brooks, and adult volunteers Paul Addison and Les Harris help with the weekly club which repairs bikes.

“It’s amazing what you can do with not a lot,” said Matt.

The club operates from a garage provided by Poole Housing Partnership. “We aim to restore old pushbikes for the community,” said PC Schofield of Hamworthy Safer Neighbourhood Team.

“If someone is short of a bike, we will do our best to get them one for free.”

However, he is realistic about the chances of their entry bringing home the trophy.

“I expect it to finish the race and that will be a good result,” he added.
