A FRAUDSTER who overcharged for sub-standard work has been sentenced to a 12-month community order after a successful prosecution brought by Borough of Poole Trading Standards.

Derek Montague, aged 40, of Bascott Road, Bourne-mouth, was found guilty of five counts of fraud at Bournemouth Crown Court last month – and sentenced on Monday.

He will have to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and pay his victim £300 compensation, as well as £5,000 prosecution costs.

The offences relate to painting and guttering work at the home of a Poole woman who was over-charged by around £250 for sub-standard work by Oakdale Home Improve-ments.

In court Montague claimed he had not carried out the work – pointing the finger instead at a casual labourer.

But Prosecuting Barrister Michael Tomlinson main-tained that Montague was the man who had done the work – and he was identified as such in court by his victim.

In sentencing on Monday Judge Johnson said he was “bullying” and had carried out “shabby work.”

He described how Montague had been to his victim’s house after she contacted Trading Standards and called her a liar, adding: “In fact you are the liar and you have lied repeatedly to the jury.”
