BOURNEMOUTH’S Tregonwell Academy is top of the class after receiving a glowing report from government inspectors.

Ofsted ranked it outstanding in every category after spending two days observing lessons and talking to pupils, parents and staff.

The Academy is spread over three sites providing education for pupils with emotional, social and behavioural difficulties.

It educates around 150 children between the ages of five and 16 with secondary pupils taught at the Petersfield Campus in Boscombe East, primary at the Nigel Bowes Centre in Ensbury Park and young people with emotional or medical needs at the Throop Learning Centre.

Inspectors praised high attainment, outstanding progress and high-quality behaviour plans in place for all pupils.

They said staff work “very effectively together”, said leadership is outstanding and said parents and carers are “overwhelmingly supportive” of the Academy.

Executive headteacher Brian Hooper is also head of the Queens Park Academy, which is also rated outstanding.

He said: “We work in an extremely challenging context so to get this accolade is wonderful. “Our absolute focus is the teaching and learning and everyone works together.”

Sian Thomas, senior head of school at the Petersfield Campus, said: “Our children are achieving really good outcomes. “We have a high turnover of pupils but we can make a difference over any period.

“We offer a truly personalised curriculum and have high expectations. We do a lot of work with the parents and hope that what we do not only changes the lives of the children but also those of their families.”

Nicki Morton, head of school at Nigel Bowes, added: “We have a focus on maths and English and also do a lot of learning outside the classroom. We have extended the primary provision and it has made a real difference.”
