IT’S all change for this year’s revived Christchurch Carnival, thanks to renewed support from the local community.

Although last year’s carnival was hailed a success by organisers, it was smaller than previous years and followed a shorter route from the Civic offices.

It was criticised by some for the small amount of floats and lack-lustre feel but now, thanks to new committee members and support from the Christchurch Round Table, the event could be set to return to the glories of previous years.

This year, to shake-things up there is an entirely new format to the carnival weekend.

On Saturday, August 17, Christchurch Quay will come alive from 10am with the Mayor’s opening address, live arena attractions and bands, Wessex Birds of Prey display and other activities leading up to the popular fireworks display in the evening, sponsored by local company, Cookes.

These attractions will only be on the Quay on Saturday, as on Sunday, August 18, the carnival procession will take place, starting at the Civic Offices at 2pm and arriving at the Quay around 3.30pm.

On the Quay, a dog show will be held along with a car show with classic, vintage and custom cars.

Julie Baker, vice-chairman of the Christchurch Carnival committee said: “We have a new committee and the support of the Roundtable’s newly elected chairman, David Putt, from Splinters restaurant.

“We also have Jamie Lafferty join us from the Round Table.

“The old committee decided they had got to a stage where they had given their support and wanted to stand down.

“It was very amicable.

“But this year, already, we have double the number of floats than last year – proper floats, not walking groups – and have had so much help from the Round Table.

“We are going back to traditional. We took comments last year on the chin and we are working very hard.

“This is building for the future and we are establishing great relationships with the community and turning it into their event.

“We want to put Christchurch on the map.”
