BOURNEMOUTH council has reassured people that work to treat weeds growing near roads in the town is safe.

A resident tweeted the Daily Echo raising worries over the work in relation to the health of people walking past.

But Stuart Best, street services manager at the council, said on Thursday: “Bournemouth Borough Council recognises that weed growth can cause damage to the highway network, and the potential safety implications of this as well as the unsightly nature of weed growth on the borough’s highway.

“Therefore, in order to maintain the public highway, the council undertakes an annual weed treatment programme.

“This year’s started last weekend and finished today. We would like to reassure residents that the treatment is safe, has been amenity approved and that all contractor operatives carrying out the treatment are qualified to National Proficiency Testing Council standard.”
