MANY towns have imposing ‘welcome’ signs.
For weary travellers it is indeed a welcome sight as they realise they have at last arrived at their destination.
Bournemouth will soon get its own ‘welcome’ sign – an illuminated 3D version which will be placed on a bridge above the A338 Spur Road.
No-one seems to be querying the need for one, just the cost.
Labour leader Ben Grower says the £86,000 taxpayer-funded sign is a waste of money and shows “a total lack of understanding of the plight of the poor”.
While Cllr Rod Cooper says it will be a long-term investment and would enhance the tourist industry.
Only time will tell if the expenditure is justified, but let’s hope it’s a winner with tourists who visit the area and contribute to the local economy.
And it is a true reflection of what Bournemouth has to offer as one of the UK’s top resorts.
