CIVIC officials have thanked Purbeck’s ‘outstanding volunteers’ at a special reception.

Purbeck District Council chairman Cllr Eric Osmond said he was privileged to host the ceremony.

Each of the volunteers were presented with a scroll for the “exceptional work they do for their local Purbeck communities.”

Among them was Eddie Rainford, from Swanage, who has been the voluntary football coach for the town’s young people for many years.

A PDC spokesman said: “He is totally dedicated to helping youngsters, always ready to go the extra mile for any talented enough to reach their full potential.

“He also helps with fundraising for the Heroes’ Haven and a Swanage care home.”

Other volunteers honoured included parish councillor Diane Joyce, of Wareham St Martin, who volunteers in Sandford and Holton Heath, and Wareham’s Bryan Jones who supports the Sunshine Club.

Cllr Osmund said: “Purbeck is privileged to have such a special group of people.

“They freely give their time, energy and skills to help others and I would like to thank them for their tireless efforts.

Their work is so important to our communities and without this commitment many local activities would not be possible.”

The other volunteers receiving scrolls were Peter Talbot of Affpuddle and Turners Puddle; Peter Collins of Arne; Alison Debenham of Bere Regis; Pete and Sue Burden of East Stoke; Peter Ashton of Lytchett Matravers; Richard Tazewell of Lytchett Minster and Upton; Vivienne King of West Lulworth; and the Friends of Wool Library.

Eleven parishes and towns across the district nominated volunteers who were congratulated in front of more than 50 people.

Cllr Osmund said: “The district council hopes that other local parishes will feel inspired in future years to recognise those special people who benefit our communities.”
