LAST year was the worst for UK butterflies on record, according to Lulworth-based Butterfly Conservation.

The Purbeck charity, the largest of its type in the world, says 52 out of 56 species monitored suffered declines during 2012.

Head of monitoring Dr Tom Brereton, said: “2012 was a catastrophic year for almost all of our butterflies, halting progress made through our conservation efforts in recent years.”
