THE National Trust has renamed a Studland bird hide in honour of a Dorset conservationist who has given 44 years service to protecting the area’s wildlife.

The former Woodland Bird Hide was rededicated the Rees Cox Bird Hide.

Mr Cox spent 28 years as a fulltime warden at Studland for Nature Conservancy, now Natural England.

When Studland passed to the National Trust in 1982 he stayed on as a volunteer, regularly leading wildlife walks and passing on his expertise.

National Trust staff, who regularly consult his “unrivalled knowledge” pressed for him to be recognised in this way.

National Trust Purbeck general manager Laurie Clark said: “It is very unusual for the National Trust to name a location after an individual.

“The idea was developed and pushed forward by staff at the property who said they really wanted to recognise what this individual has done.

“This has really been a groundswell of people’s wishes.”
