A LEGACY from a former patient at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital has funded a high-tech breast scanner to help speed up diagnosis.

The mobile scanner will provide patients with initial feedback at the clinic before further information can be gained from more detailed scans.

RBCH consultant, Dexter Perry, said: “We are delighted that we have been able to purchase a breast ultrasound machine, which we can use as an additional tool when assessing patients in the breast clinic. This will help speed up the diagnostic process and be used as an aid to treatment.

“We currently have one machine which is used by three surgeons often working at the same time. This second machine means patients are not waiting, they can have more of a one-stop service and can be reassured more readily than before.”

The new equipment has been purchased with money left to the Trust by Gordon Francis, a former patient at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

Lindsey Sturman, RBCH fundraising manager, said: “Mr Francis’ family said it was his wish the legacy be spent on equipment within the urology department and towards breast cancer care at RBH. We would like to express our sincere thanks for this donation and would like to assure the family that the new equipment this legacy has purchased will enhance patient treatment for years to come.”
