FRIENDS of a teenager killed in a horror crash pedalled 28 miles to raise money for a new safety campaign.

Mikey Maguire died when the car he was a passenger in hit a tree in Lytchett Matravers and his mum Allison Jarman is campaigning to get the speed limit lowered on Huntick Road, where he died.

A group of the 19-year-old’s friends took to their saddles in the first fundraiser for Mikey’s Foundation, which Alison is planning to develop into a registered charity for the campaign and to promote road safety.

Allison, who lives in Upton, said she is hoping to hold two fundraisers each year with the foundation aimed at helping to raise awareness of road dangers to young drivers.

She said: “Those who rode were all friends from the area. It was really touching and it’s given me something else to focus on.

“We want to see the speed limit on Huntick Road dropped to 40.”

Mikey, who died in the crash on February 8, was a former Purbeck School pupil.

Allison was among four support cars who followed the riders from Greenridge at Upton along Blandford Road and across to Poole Quay.

The riders carried on through to Sandbanks and across the ferry to return to Upton via Corfe Castle and Wareham.

They overcame bike problems including tyre punctures to complete the journey in around two hours and 40 minutes.

The idea for the bike ride came from Mikey’s friend Sonny Rayment, which sparked the idea for the foundation.

Sonny, 17, said they raised close to £1,000 in sponsorship and hopes the money may also be used to plant a tree in Mikey’s memory.

“The ride was good but it was a bit like torture going uphill towards Corfe Castle,” he joked.

“It was something to look forward to.”
