Picture special: Dorset's incredible "icicle hedge"

A WINTER spell has been cast over this hedge near Beacon Hill, with water splashed from roadside puddles transformed into an intricate ice sculpture.

One amazed motorist, who stopped to admire the wall of icicles on the A350, said: “It’s incredible. I’ve never seen anything like this before. It has happened naturally, but it looks like someone has created it.”

Although spring is on its way, an icy blast has seen Dorset shiver again for the last few days.

And the cold spell is set to continue for much of the week, with brisk winds making temperatures drop even lower along the coast.

The weather today will peak at 6C at around 3pm, but thanks to the bitter wind, the temperature will feel more like 2C.

The outlook for the rest of the week is overcast, although the Met Office is not predicting any snow.

There are also no weather warnings in place.

In the north of the county, winds will be slightly less brisk, averaging 12 miles per hour from the north-east to Bournemouth’s 14 mph.

However, there could be gusts of up to 27 mph at around noon.

Cliff Thomas, who runs Wareham Weather, warned that it would remain overcast and chilly for some time.

“It’s staying pretty dull and dismal,” he said.
