INSPECTORS have praised “engaging” teaching and “good progress” at the Burgate School and Sixth Form.

They ranked the Fordingbridge school as good with outstanding features after a two-day visit in January.

“My first two years as head teacher have been a very excit¬ing journey and we have made huge progress” said David Pover.

“Whilst I believe that The Burgate already provides the best local education for girls and boys, our desire to be one of the very best schools nationally con¬tinues with great enthusiasm.”

Ofsted inspectors were on site at the 1,002 pupil school for two days and saw 47 lessons taught by 43 teachers. Meetings were held with students from most years and inspectors studied the views of parents, carers and staff.

Achievement of pupils, quality of teaching and leadership and management were all rated good with behaviour and safety of pupils ranked outstanding.

Inspectors said: “The excellent relationships between students and staff revolve around mutual respect. This allows for a range of activities to be undertaken without risk of disruption or silliness.

“Students are mature and responsible young people who respect the adults in the school, each other and the buildings and equipment.

“The excellent care, support and guidance in the sixth form are particular strengths with a wide range of extra-curricular activities offered and high-quali¬ty guidance provided on oppor¬tunities beyond school.”
