Chris Chope: "Servants" is just what they are called

First published in News

Christchurch MP Chris Chope has clarified why he called House of Commons waiters and waitresses, “servants” during a debate in Westminster on Friday.

His use of the word has caused consternation on social media sites and was the focus of a Sky News story.

Conservative Mr Chope told the Daily Echo people employed by the House of Commons were called “servants of the house”, hence his statement during questions in the Commons.

“It just shows how the use of language is different in the House. Someone employed by the House of Commons is called a servant of the house”, he said.

And to show how use of language is different outside of The House of Commons, you should hear what people call members of your party Mr Chope!

If you think he comes across as odious in the media, try meeting him the flesh.

This is the chap who whilst helping himself to very generous expenses campaigned to remove the minimum wage (perhaps he could tell us how much he pays his wife out of our money, supposedly as his secretary)

The chap who also tried to delay a debate on the Hillsbourough enquiry to allow time to debate MP's pensions instead.

But the real point here is that the 'servants' comment came when he was asking Parliament whether the prices in the MP's restuarant could not be cut.

Yes, cut !

There may be a case for his using out dated parliamentary/public school language whilst referring to staff in old fashioned and to many obscene way, but he has no excuse for proposing that MPs pay less for their already subsidised food and drink.

Just remember, "we are all in it together"
