WEEKS of hard work finally paid off when villagers unveiled their stunning scarecrow nativity story in Holdenhurst.

Thirteen life-sized models made out of hay, wood and paper have been erected on the green and at the entrance to the picturesque village.

Wendy Sharp and her husband Alan were among those who helped create The Three Kings, shepherds, Angel Gab-riel, Mary and Joseph as well as the innkeeper and his wife.

A donkey and lambs add to the nativity scarecrow scene, with a crib which will be lit every night, along with the nearby Christmas tree, until the New Year.

Wendy said: “It’s been a fantastic effort by the entire village. Everyone has done their bit, from supplying materials for the scarecrows, lights or putting their artistic skills to good use.

“The scarecrows’ heads were all made during workshops in our kitchen; all ages were involved and we’re delighted with the response.

“Farmer Roger Seare dropped off two bales of hay and my brother Peter Farnum, who also lives in the village and manufactures furniture, gave us the remnants of material to use for the costumes.”

Alan, who came up with the novel idea after five successful summer scarecrow competitions in the village, said: “It involved a lot of hard work but it’s been worthwhile; maybe it will become an annual event.”
