WIMBORNE was put on the map after a new tourism heritage sign was unveiled in the Square.

The colourful display, designed by East Dorset District Council’s graphics team, highlights places of interest as well as offering a flavour of the town’s history.

The sign was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Wimborne and unveiled by their president Roy Salmon, who said: “The club is delighted to help promote tourism and business in the town and be part of the enhanced Square development through sponsorship of this new sign, which replaces a sign funded by the Rotary Club in 1995.”

Creating the sign was a community effort, with a number of local groups getting involved.

The Rotary club assisted East Dorset Tourism Manager Rachel Limb with layout and design, as well as funding the sign, while the Priest’s House Museum supplied images of the Square and played a key role in submitting and verifying the historic information, as did the Minister Church of St Cuthburga.

Cllr Lucy Clark, chair of the district council, said: “Tourism plays an important role in supporting Wimborne’s economy and I am sure that the sign will enhance the visitor experience for many people and encourage them to spend more time in the town.”

The unveiling was also attended by the mayor and mayoress of Wimborne, Cllr John and Anne Burden, Anthony Oliver representing the Minster Church of St Cuthburga, and officers from the Wimborne Tourist Information Centre.
