KNITTED boobs to encourage breastfeeding? It might sound wacky but they are being used as a teaching aid for young mums and health professionals.

Local crafters are being enlisted to create more of the breasts to help convince more young mums in Dorset about the benefits of breastfeeding their babies.

Dorset HealthCare’s breastfeeding support team is using the breasts when teaching health professionals as well as expectant and new mothers as part of UNICEF’s Baby Friendly initiative.

The initiative aims to increase breastfeeding rates in hospitals and in the community for the sake of mothers’ and children’s health.

The team provides expert advice and support for any new mothers experiencing difficulties with breast feeding, and there are several peer support groups around the county.

Breastfeeding educator Caroline Baddiley explained: “We are always trying to find innovative ways of improving breastfeeding rates and our knitted breasts are certainly a talking point.

“They are also useful when teaching midwives, health visitors and health care students how to pass on useful skills to new mums.”

The project is supported by local artist Pauline Stanley, who masterminded the Knitted Garden artwork.

Pauline is encouraging her Ravelry Facebook followers to join local knitters casting on for the unusual community initiative.

“The project is a novel way to include the community in helping raise breastfeeding awareness in a fun way,” said Caroline.
