FRUSTRATED traders and businesses in Christchurch are launching a campaign for cheaper parking in the town.

Led by the Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce, the campaign is asking the council to create a “£1 for two hours” parking provision in Christchurch town centre.

Over the past few years increasing parking charges have become an issue for businesses.

This is especially so with the popularity of the Castlepoint Shopping Centre, which offers free parking for customers and other initiatives in neighbouring towns.

President Peter Watson-Lee said: “So far, there is not a single shop that has not been fully supportive of the idea. It’s an issue that really affects everyone and so the idea has been very popular.

“Most of the shops are displaying posters and many of them will be looking after a petition for people of the town to sign and support us.

“We’ve done some calculations and we don’t think it will actually lose the council any money.

“In fact, if it is successful it could make them more profit.

“We are aware parking income is important but we genuinely believe this initiative would increase visitors.”

Traders, mindful of the possibility of another two supermarkets with free parking in the borough, are fearful the charges will continue to deter people from visiting the High Street.

Mr Watson-Lee added: “I have spoken to many businesses who all have the same story regarding people having to leave their shop or business without buying anything because of parking times.

“We just hope that this straightforward fee will encourage people to come to the town and also that it might encourage them to relax and browse the shops.

“We have a pleasant town centre and want to encourage visitors to explore and enjoy it.”
