A BUTTERFLY farm that will “rival any in the world” could be built on Bournemouth seafront, it’s hoped.

Two people, described as “world experts” in the field of butterfly farms, have expressed an interest in opening a new indoor attraction in Bournemouth.

And the possible site is land behind the Durley Inn at Durley Chine, adjacent to the council car park there.

Cllr Rod Cooper, cabinet member for tourism, leisure and culture, told the last full council meeting: “In the present case the site is likely to include a small shop, a cafe and an education centre.

“Outside of the glass house there are expected to be plants aimed at attracting native butterflies, whilst in the background, as part of the council’s Cliffs Cons-ervation Manage-ment Plan, will be goats grazing.

“If the project progresses, then the council will consider taking the opportunity to install a small children’s play area in the vicinity, which would be open all the year round and free for use.”

He said the two potential operators had nearly 50 years’ experience of installing and operating butterfly farms and added: “They believe that they will create, in their words, ‘a phenomenal farm to rival any in the world.’ The site in question is owned by the Cooper Dean Estates and leased to the council.

The Cooper Dean trustees are said to “welcome sensible and new visitor attractions to Bourn-emouth.”

Cllr Cooper said: “It would be very positive for the town, if it happens.

“I think it would be perfect for the town and great for the local schools to use as an educational resource.

“I’m really excited about it – if it happens.”
