Primary school youngsters in plea over dog mess spoiling the heathland at Redhill Common

Bournemouth Echo: FED-UP: Children from Hill View Primary School, with teacher Chris Barnett, at Redhill Common FED-UP: Children from Hill View Primary School, with teacher Chris Barnett, at Redhill Common

PUPILS from a Bournemouth primary school are urging irresponsible dog owners to pick up after their pets and stop ruining their precious heathland.

The 90 boys and girls of year three at Hillview Primary School felt so strongly about the issue on Redhill Common that they each wrote a letter to the Daily Echo.

Teacher Chris Barnett said the three classes visited the common each week during the first part of the autumn term to learn about the unique species of lizards and other wildlife that live there.

He said: “When you are in there you don’t know where you are treading and several of the children have trodden in mess.

“The fact people let their dogs leave mess on the common even when there are 30 schoolchildren on there just beggars belief.”

Mr Barnett added: “We are not going to tar all dog owners but we have found it is a big problem here and something the children felt very strongly about.”

Grace, eight, said: “I feel very frustrated because people don’t pick it up.”

Aivija, seven, said: “I am actually quite shocked about it because it could cause blindness, it could cause disease and also it’s bad for the heathland.”

And Kyle, eight, added: “I feel ashamed of the dog owners. Please don’t be lazy – pick it up.”

The common like many others is a giant dogs toilet and the school has a very legitimate complaint.I unfortunely have watched dog owners just do nothing to clean up.

Hey kids, this is Bournemouth!
How dare you try and criticise any dog owner!
When you get to move on to a higher level of schooling you will learn that the ancient Egyptians worshiped dogs.
In Bournemouth, nothing much has changed in five thousand years.
You don't like wading through the stuff that the dog lovers pets leave?
I hate to tell you this but this is the way it is untill you lot assume power and send the latter day Egyptians back to their sarcophaguses.
Good luck!
You will need it!

i came past redhill this morning and saw a chap about 50ish picking up after his dog and my 1st thought was how unusual my 2nd thought was how hard can it be for the council to get someone to sit in the layby and catch people who dont pick up i think they have the power to issue a fine

I think there is only one dog warden and the Parks & Countryside team are under staffed!
I am a dog owner who walks on a nature reserve with 5 dog bins yet we still get problems.Sometimes it is picked up and thrown in the bushes!.I was told last week that someone saw a lady leave her dog bag on the path and when she was asked why, she said she left it there as someone else will pick it up!!
Another problem is that many groom their dogs and leave it to blow around.Perhaps the Council should reuse the sites as dog grooming parlours?

Primary School pupils feeling so 'strongly'! Never read such garbage.
More likely the school teacher is anti dog and has used this as a platform for attacking dog owners.

Maybe the kids got upset after wading through the "whatever" that the local Egyptians left behind!
Go for them kids, it will be your turn soon!

As with any part of society, the few spoil it for the many.
Most dog owners do pick up their dog's mess. There are always those who don't.
As for Dog Wardens sitting watching for offenders, how do we share one Dog Warden between the numerous sites in the borough ?

What a stupid comment to make to children of that age. many dog owners are responsible, I know I own a dog and often see other dog owners cleaning up. Yes some don't but do not assume all dog owners are lazy. Just as I do not assume all those that make a comment here are biased as you are.

dog owners ! - a question . why do you buy a dog and every time you take it out spend the whole time dragging it here, dragging it there ,pulling this social animal away from other dogs ,stop it from investigating and sniffing around ? its what they insinctively do . if you want to go for a straight walk along the prom leave the dog at home or better still dont take on the responsibility ,how would you like someone snatching a lead round your neck 6 times a minute ? .frankly if i were a dog and you did that to me i'd take a bite size chunk out of your leg
have the common decency to either train your dog properly or put it on a roaming lead and give it time to explore . jerking a dogs lead is unessessary and in oppinion ,abuse of the animal

Dog poop is a problem everywhere, even on sidewalks where children walk to and from school. People have no respect! And "dog lovers" will always defend themselves on here, but humans come first!

Stop ruining your community people!

It should be illegal for dogs to be allowed in such places, and specific dog parks allocated.

Biased?
Take a look in the mirror!
That was just aimed at "the lazy few".
Sorry if it was a bit too subtle for you!
I am not really biased, I just dislike the "my dog and I will do what and when we want" attitude of so many of your ilk!
Its called selfishness and to hell with everyone else!
