POPPY Appeal collector Paul Yates MBE will be raising funds for the Royal British Legion this year to keep the memory of his grandfather and great-grandfather alive.

Paul, 48, who lives in Poole, proudly displayed their medals during the launch of this year’s Poppy Appeal at Bournemouth Town Hall. He told the Daily Echo: “If it wasn’t for the bravery of men like my grandfather and great-grandfather none of us would be here today.

“It is important that we repay those who have given so much to ensure that we all have a future; it is also crucial that we support injured servicemen and women as well as their families.

So many people receive help from the Royal British Legion every day, including those who return home with terrible injuries including missing limbs. It is vital that support is available, when they need it most.”

During the past 22 years, the unemployed supermarket worker has helped raise more than £4million for the Royal British Legion and the Scout Association. His charity work was officially recognised when he was awarded the MBE.

Paul’s great-grandfather James Langley-Dalton was awarded the Victoria Cross in recognition of his bravery during the Zulu War.

Paul said: “Despite his leg being blown off and being really outnumbered he managed to save most of his comrades.”

He is organising a fundraising event in Bournemouth Square on Saturday, November 3, when big-hearted staff from Rubyz will dress up in wartime costume and serenade shoppers to boost the Poppy Appeal’s coffers.
