THE legend that is Ray Sawyer has made a very rare appearance.
With a talented backing band full of Nashville veterans, the Dr Hook singer played a rousing set for nearly an hour and a half – not bad for a 72-year-old! He won the crowd over with Dr Hook favourites such as A Little Bit More, A Couple More Years, Queen of the Silver Dollar, When You’re In Love With a Beautiful Woman and Millionaire.
He even did an impromptu version of You Are My Sunshine when there was a problem with the guitars – and squeezed in a fantastic version of the soul classic (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay.
It was a treat for those of us too young to have seen him the first time round and a welcome reminder of his amazing talent for those who have seen him before. As he closed the set that had the crowd singing along with Sylvia’s Mother we hope he won’t leave it as long until he is back again.
