THE exceptionally gifted international cellist Truls Mork left an impressive mark on a Poole audience in a live Radio 3 broadcast.

The often physical and virtuosic demands of Prokoiev’s Sinfonia Conertante for cello and orchestra elicited a ‘wow’ from many a lip; this 40 minute, imaginative joust between post-romantic lyricism and aggressively rhythmic charges contained some wonderfully piquant sounds.

Mork’s truly amazing musicianship conjured considerable beauty of line and tone from a work that could seem overpoweringly assertive and gaining in the process new admirers for the work and the soloist.

With a full concert orchestra under his direction Kirill Karabits unleashed the Introduction to Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Sleeping beauty with tremendous power.

The skill to evoke a pyrotechnic display in music opened the door to Diaghilev’s ballet Ruses for Stravinsky. His imaginative fireworks lit-up the Lighthouse with scintillating playing by the BSO under Karabit’s dynamic encouragement.
