A TOTAL triumph! These spectacular sequinned sisters are raising the roof at Southampton's Mayflower Theatre.

So if you want to lift the gloom on a miserable February night then it's definitely the place to be.

With divine comedy, a top notch cast, upbeat theme and dazzling costumes it's easy to see why a million people flocked to see this fantastic Whoopi Goldberg production in the West End.

When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, police put her in protective custody in the place the violent killer would never think to look - a convent.

Brilliantly played by Cynthia Erivo, Deloris shocks the Mother Superior and almost gets thrown out before turning her attention to the convent's out-of-tune, down-in-the-dumps choir.

From that point it's laughs all the way as she transforms the frumpy nuns into a funky crew, attracting thousands of people to the convent and securing its future.

But the nun on the run still has to avoid the killer trying to catch her - with the help of her newly-transformed sisters.

From beginning to end, the audience was enthralled. A glance around revealed usually grumpy teenagers in hysterics, dozens of people in flood of tears - in a good way - and hundreds on their feet dancing along to the Motown and disco-inspired songs. Two hours flew by.

Cast members have impressive backgrounds in music, theatre and television.

Denise Black is great as Mother Superior. Although probably best known as Denise Osbourne in Coronation Street, her award-winning theatre career, TV work and rock band make her one of the most versatile performers out there.

Michael Starke - Sinbad from Brookside - is a hilarious Monsignor O'Hara and look out for relative newcomer Tyrone Huntley. His performance as TJ earned some of the biggest cheers of the night.

Sister Act runs until Saturday March 3 and there are still a few tickets left. Be quick - you'll regret it if you miss this one.
