It’s Grimethorpe the Great at their Grand Night Out best.

The real musicians behind Brassed Off, Grimethorpe Colliery Band from Yorkshire, saw an impressive turn out for an all embracing programme under their amiable director Howard Evans.

The concert’s first half included Shostakovich’s aptly energetic - he was given three days to compose it - Festival Overture, a soprano cornet solo from Kevin Crockford with Nash’s Demelza, the proms old favourite Jerusalem, and Gliere’s compelling work the Russian Sailors’ Dance.

The second half began with the Bournemouth Male Choir ranging from Blue Moon to the African Prayer.

Grimethorpe swept back on stage with Irving Berlin’s Let’s Face The Music And Dance.

Among other highlights were Robert Westacott’s cornet solo of Stars from Les Miserables and the rousing finale to Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony.

The encore was their own full throttle finale to Brassed Off - Rossini’s glorious William Tell Overture.
