The Mill is the latest offering from the aerial theatre company Ockham’s Razor. The show, co-devised with Olivier Award winning Theatre choreographer Toby Sedgewick was divided into two sections.

Firstly, the five characters presented the audience with an impressive display of physical theatre in which they work together using pulleys, ropes and wheels to create a functioning system in a factory. The system, powered by the strength and weight of the performers is centred on a large wheel made of wood suspended seven metres from the floor.

The low-key lighting and minimal dialogue allowed the audience to focus their attention on the strength, balance and creativity of the team.

Initially the movements were fairly simple but soon gained momentum and impetus as time progressed with daring jumps, tight-rope walking and impressive acrobatics.

A booming voiceover off stage, like a foreman, demands the ‘workers’ continue whenever the system breaks down.

In the second half, the audience were invited to a question and answer session with the cast members and producer, Alison King.

The performers shared their experience of circus training and their interpretations of the piece.

When asked about how the group became such a trusting team front-man, played by Alex Harvey said it took a lot of practise and crash mats in order to build ‘confidence in the equipment, yourself and each other’.

The Mill marks the start of the Blanche Carte contemporary circus season at the Lighthouse. Throughout the month, visitors can attend various circus themed shows and workshops.
