Blowing someone else’s trumpet, in this instance Alfred Hollins’ brilliant Trumpet Minuet, Danny Campbell, organist of Richmond Hill URC sounded all the right stops in this final concert of the summer series.

Anniversaries inevitably draw out a wider appreciation of a composer’s oeuvre and marking the bicentenary of the birth of Schumann were two pieces; the powerful Fugue No.1 on B.A.C.H. and the delightful Sketch in D flat.

With Bournemouth’s own 200th celebrations, the two local composers featured throughout these recitals were again on the programme. Hubert Parry’s Prelude on “Martyrdom” and Percy Whitlock’s Pastorale (on Psalm 23 v 1) were both simple, sincere models in variation form.

From the West Country and also sharing Schumann’s anniversary Samuel S. Wesley composed the rocking rhythm to Holsworthy Church Bells based upon the carillon. And there can be few of us unaware of the 70th celebrations for the Battle of Britain. Campbell’s opening piece by Walton, The ’Spitfire’ made an impressive tribute to those aces of the sky.

Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in A major, BWV 536 flowed fluently, Harold Darke’s Fantasy for Organ surged magnificently from tranquil episodes and for his final flourish Campbell filled the church with the bright, airy Toccata of Georgi Mushel.
