OVER one million copies of Charmaine were sold during the 1950’s and 60’s. This was the signature tune of the Mantovani Orchestra with its renowned cascading strings.

The magic of this 45-piece ensemble was brought back to Bournemouth once again by percussionist Paul Barrett and Frank Leprince in a concert featuring the golden hits of the Sixties.

Conducted by Gavin Sutherland and introduced by Ed ‘Stewpot’ Stewart, vocals were provided by the Indonesian singer Joy Tobing making her debut with the orchestra. The programme ranged from The Beatles to James Bond. We went back to Yesterday, took a walk in the Black Forest, met Strangers In the Night, Lost Our heart in San Francisco and was shaken not stirred with the James Bond theme.

Using the original handwritten score, the leader and the conductor have ensured that every number remained faithful to the original. 2013 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Magic of the Mantovani Orchestra and may it have many more anniversaries.
