AS unpretentious as the late 80’s acid house scene that spawned them, Orbital produced a memorable evening of rumbling bass-lines and squelchy synths. Despite the O2 Academy Bournemouth at half capacity, Phil and Paul Hartnoll were in the mood to ‘get right on one’ as they say.

The Orbital boys donned the trademark headtorch glasses and set about leveling the venue with wave after wave of gut wrenching low frequencies from behind the banks of electronic gadgetry on stage.

Kicking off with material from recent comeback album Wonky, the night really got moving with the introduction of a Belinda Carlisle sampling Halcyon.

It was these timeless older tracks like Belfast and Impact (The Earth Is Burning) that sparked collective memories of raving in a field or a sweaty club night. With plenty of elbow room on the dance floor, Dad dancing was the order of the day of which I was certainly guilty.

The privileged few, who had braved a cold December night, were also rewarded with a blistering breakbeat reworking of the Doctor Who theme. The never-ending encore yielded more treats and peaked with the cascading charms of 1989 debut single, Chime.

It’s only a shame it was a week night, as this intimate audience would have been more than happy to dance until sunrise.
