IN a world where guitar music doesn’t seem to be all that fashionable at the moment, you have to hand it to The Vaccines for keeping the flag flying and forcing themselves into the spotlight.

Their breakthrough album What Did You Expect from the Vaccines? hit number four in the charts last year and the follow-up, Come of Age, released in September, made number one.

And it’s not hard to see why. The band entered to Slade’s Cum On Feel The Noize, and my oh my, did we.

This is raucous, simple, energetic, no-nonsense indie rock at its best.

The band delivered their quick-fire tracks in rapid succession (most of them are less than two minutes long), barely stopping for breath in a show that lasted little more than an hour.

When you consider they’ve only been together for two years they are a polished outfit and the crowd lapped up tune after tune.

Of course the big favourites were singles such as If You Wanna, Wreckin Bar (Ra Ra Ra) and Post Break-Up Sex and they got everyone jumping.

Tracks from the latest album, including Teenage Icon, went down equally well.

Lead singer Justin Young threw himself into every note but didn’t lack a friendliness and rapport with the audience despite only engaging lightly in conversation.

And the band's sense of humour showed as they bid farewell to a roadie on stage, dressing him up in women’s clothing and playing some Whitney Houston over the speakers.

After that light moment all that was left was for the roof to be blown off with the final song, Norgaard.

The Vaccines do upbeat indie really well and, although short, this show was definitely sweet.
